As early as 1956, preparation for setting up the Institute of Semiconductors began in accordance with the "Four urgent measures" set in the "12-year Program for Scientific Development". The Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences, a comprehensive research institution specialized in semiconductors science and technology at the State level, was formally established in 1960. Its research fields cover semiconductor physics, material, devices and system integration.
Since its foundation, the Institute of Semiconductors has made outstanding contributions to China's advancement of science and technology in the area of semiconductors in all historic periods. It successfully developed China's first Ge transistor, Si planar transistor, solid-state-module, the first Ge monocrystal, Si monocrystal, AsGa monocrystal; Designed and made China' first Si (monocrystal growing furnace) puller, zone refiner, etc., hence making direct and significant contributions to the national economic construction and development.
